What chain link fencing is

Chain link fence (also written chainlink, and sometimes called diamond mesh, cyclone fence, or GI wire mesh when galvanized) is woven from single wires that are bent into a zig-zag and hooked into each other, so the finished mesh forms a pattern of diamonds. Because every wire carries load across the whole panel, the fence flexes under impact instead of breaking, and a damaged section can be repaired without replacing the full run.

It is the most widely used boundary fence for factories, schools, farms, plots, sports courts, solar parks and substations because it is quick to install, lets light and air through, and costs far less per metre than a wall.

GI or PVC coated?

GI (galvanized iron) chain link has a zinc coating that protects the steel from rust. It is the practical choice for industrial and agricultural boundaries and comes in a plain silver finish.

PVC coated chain link adds a plastic layer over the wire. The coating improves weather resistance, gives a neat green finish that blends with gardens and landscaping, and is popular for residential, commercial and campus boundaries.

Choosing mesh size, wire and height

A smaller mesh opening (1 to 2 inch) is harder to climb and keeps out small animals; a larger opening (3 to 4 inch) uses less wire and costs less for long field boundaries. Thicker wire (lower gauge number, such as 8 or 10 gauge) is stronger and lasts longer than thin wire. For most plot and factory boundaries, 5 to 6 ft is common; security perimeters usually go higher and add barbed wire or concertina coil on top.

Questions buyers ask

What sizes of chain link fence do you make?

Mesh openings from 1 inch to 4 inch (25 × 25 mm to 100 × 100 mm), wire from 1.6 mm to 4 mm for GI and 3 to 5 mm for PVC coated, and heights up to 15 ft. Rolls are 15 m long. Other sizes can be made to order.

How many rolls of chain link do I need?

Each roll is 15 metres long. Divide the total length of your boundary in metres by 15 and round up. For example, a 100 m boundary needs 7 rolls. Our fence buying guide has a calculator.
